Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a severe bone condition that can sometimes develop after taking certain medications.
What Causes MRONJ?
MRONJ typically develops when medications disrupt the natural balance between bone breakdown and bone regeneration. Common culprits include bisphosphonates, denosumab, and antiangiogenic drugs. These medications, while effective for treating conditions like osteoporosis or metastatic bone cancer, can reduce bone turnover and limit the jaw’s blood supply, making it difficult for the bone to self-repair after trauma or dental procedures. As a result, portions of the jawbone may lose vitality, leading to necrosis. Patients undergoing long-term, high-dose therapy for cancer-related conditions or those with existing dental issues and poor oral hygiene may face an even higher risk of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw in West Palm Beach or Jupiter.
